Guat Spot

As time progresses and the chapters of history are written, new words and phrases situate themselves among the accepted vocabulary of our society. This is inevitable, and can be positive, but every so often it all goes wrong. Every so often a word is spawned which is so foul and disgusting to the eyes and ears of readers and listeners that it must be rejected by those of us who are responsible enough to do so. In the past decade, one such word has been created and has invaded our collective consciousness to a frightening degree. That word is "Blog". When I imagine what it might be like to hold a "blog", I vomit just a little bit in my mouth. "blog" is a word better suited to describe some strange variety of putrid, disease ridden, goo. In response to this assault on our vernacular, we have decided to fight fire with Guat. "Guat" is a similarly disgusting and arbitrary word, but invokes a much more comical response. We hope that "Guat" will take over and "blog" will suffer the very same wretched and horrifying fate that it sounds like it may describe. Blogs are dead. Welcome to the Guat.

This is a video of Retna and EL Mac working on one of their latest collaborative murals in Culver City, Los Angeles.  I was actually in LA checking out galleries while they were working on this piece, and happened to stumble upon them working.  I was pretty excited to see that, and hung out for a while to watch.  I suspect I’m actually in this video somewhere amongst the fast motion time lapse action, although my eye wasn’t quick enough to tell.  Anyway, this is a really cool mural entitled, Of Our Youth.  It was inspired by a conversation that the duo had with a man called “Chato” while working on another piece in downtown LA.
